Early Cars of Big Spring

Home of Texas Oldest Rod Run! We are located in Big Spring, Texas. Big Spring, the county seat of Howard County, and is at the "crossroads" of Interstate Highway 20, U.S. highway 87, State Highway 350, and the Missouri Pacific line. The city is in a rocky gorge where the northern limit of the Edwards Plateau and the southern most hills of the Caprock converge. It is named for the "big spring" in Sulphur Draw, historical watering place for coyotes, wolves, and herds of buffalo, antelope, and mustangs; the spring was a source of conflict between Comanche and Shawnee Indians. Signal Mountain, ten miles southeast of Big Spring, was a landmark used by early cattlemen. In 1849 Capt. Randolph B. Marcy's expedition reached Big Spring on the return trip from Santa Fe and marked it as a campsite on the Overland Trail to California. 2000 Howard County Population: 33,627 (courtesy: City of Big spring) Our 35th consecutive Rod Run was a great success. We would like to thank all of the participants! You have some beautiful rides!

In 1968, Raymond Hogg, Gary Richardson, Autry Moore, and Russell White had the first meeting of what would become the Early Cars car club which now holds Texas' Oldest Consecutive Rod Run. They held their first rod run in 1971 at Birdwell Park as a local event and in 1972 it was advertised and open to everyone. The car show started as a separate event to help put on the Rod Run. It was held at the fair grounds in May and the Rod Run was on Labor Day weekend. You never know who will show up at the Car Show. One time the ZZTop car stopped and several times we had Rod and the Custom Magazine Editor on site.

Some special people worked the car show and rod run those first years. They were Raymond Hogg, Frank Edwards & Walter Brumley.

Heartland Cruisers

We are a small club with absolutely no dues, no rules, and no officers. This works because you can not find a more eager and happy-to-help group of people.

We are located in the heart of Texas. When the original group could no longer put on the car show here in Brownwood, we just could not let it die out; so began the Heartland Cruisers.

The Club is primarily the brain child of three, Paul, Donnie and Wayne, but it is in the heart and soul of countless rodders. The group just grows and grows. It may even be time to organize as a structured association.

During the year we participate in many activities. The big event is our Rod Run in June with entries from everywhere you could imagine. Beginning in 2008, there were 194 entries. In 2009 we had 270 entries. Then in 2010, the number of entries grew to 305. And then in 2011, we had a record of 411 entries!

We also hold a car show for the Brownwood Reunion.

In some form or fashion we participate in approximately 40 events over the year. You know, there are only 52 weeks in a year, but who is counting when you are having fun.

What a Great Group we have, and thanks to all that pitch in and make it happen.

Besides being fellow Lamborghini owners and car enthusiasts, they also shared a strong passion for Automobili Lamborghini and the raging bull.
